Mayor Lavelle Issues Latest Proclamation In Response to COVID-19

Mayor Lydia Lavelle

This past week has been the most challenging for our town in decades. Since issuing an Emergency Proclamation in Carrboro last Friday, the number of COVID-19 cases in our state has continued to rise, with our first cases now appearing in Orange County. This pandemic is affecting our residents and employees who work in our town in unprecedented ways.

I am proud of the way our town staff has transitioned their work duties in order to continue to provide essential services to community members during this time. Council members have been diligent in communicating with residents, and following up with concerns. I have been on many meetings with fellow mayors, leaders, business partners, and others as we try to cope with this new reality.

I am also proud of the way our town residents and businesses have responded to this situation. Residents have not been gathering publicly in large groups. Those that have been out walking on our sidewalks or in our parks have respected social distancing. Even before the Governor’s order, several restaurants had already made the hard decision to shut their dining rooms.

The proclamation I am issuing today reemphasizes what we have already been doing. It also gives guidance on what to do if you or someone you know begins to show signs of coronavirus. Finally, the proclamation outlines ways Carrboro residents can support our local restaurants and workforce that have suddenly and directly been financially impacted.

It has always been my great honor to be your Mayor. That is never truer than during these trying times.

Yours in service,

Mayor Lydia Lavelle
