Earth Day



WHEREAS, Earth Day was founded in the United States on April 22, 1970 to raise awareness and encourage action to protect and safeguard our planet for future generations; and

WHEREAS, it inspired the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and landmark legislation that protects the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the animals that live alongside us; and

WHEREAS, the global community now faces extraordinary challenges that require collective action, as demonstrated in the Paris Agreement, where countries established a framework and made a commitment to reduce global carbon pollution ; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Carrboro has joined  Cities for Climate Protection, adopted a climate protection resolution, formed an Energy and Climate Action Task Force, and earlier this year unveiled a Community Climate Action Plan; and

WHEREAS, Carrboro’s local interest in participating in Earth Day is inspired by its unique ecosystems, including our forests, fields, creeks, and more urban lands; and

WHEREAS, we each have a role to play in ensuring that we pass on a healthy and beautiful world with a rich biological endowment to future generations.  

NOW THEREFORE IT BE RESOLVED, that I, Lydia Lavelle, Mayor of Carrboro, do hereby proclaim April 22, 2017, as Earth Day.  I encourage all residents and businesses to support green economy initiatives in Carrboro and marshal our best efforts toward building a safer, more stable and sustainable world.
