Mental Health Awareness Month


PROCLAMATION
“MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH”

WHEREAS, 43.8 million adults experience mental illness in a given year; and

WHEREAS, 1 in 100 (2.4) million American adults live with schizophrenia, 2/6% of American adults live with bipolar disorder, 6.9% of American adults live with major depression, and 18.1% of American adults live with anxiety disorders; and 

WHEREAS, mental health helps to sustain an individual’s thought processes, relationships, productivity, and ability to adapt to change or face adversity; and 

WHEREAS, mental health is essential to everyone’s overall health and emotional well-being; and
WHEREAS, every day millions of Americans and their families live with or work to help those who are living with a mental illness; and
WHEREAS, greater public awareness about mental wellness can positively transform attitudes towards people with mental illness, making it easier for our fellow citizens to seek help; and
WHEREAS, Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to increase public understanding of the importance of mental health and to promote identification and treatment of mental illness;
WHEREAS, mood disorders, including major depression and bipolar disorder, are the third most common cause of hospitalization in the U.S. for both youth and adults aged 18 – 44; and 

WHEREAS, feelings of personal shame and fears of social stigma and discrimination prevent many suffering from mental illness from seeking help; and 

WHEREAS, every citizen and community can make a difference in helping end the silence and stigma that for too long has surrounded mental illness and discouraged people from getting help; and

WHEREAS, Carrboro is fortunate to have providers in our community such as Club Nova, that supports its members by focusing on their strengths and potential, and addresses their needs by providing a holistic, caring environment designed to promote rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Lydia E. Lavelle, Mayor of the Town of Carrboro, North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 2017 as MENTAL HEALTH MONTH in the Town of Carrboro, and I ask all citizens to strive to support our fellow citizens in their struggles to achieve and maintain their mental health.
