Mayor Lavelle Proclaimed January 5, 2019 as
“Libba Cotton Day”

This past Saturday Mayor Lavelle proclaimed January 5, 2019 as “Libba Cotton Day” in Carrboro.  Cotton was born to George and Louisa Nevill on January 5, 1893 in Orange County, North Carolina in an area that would eventually become the Town of Carrboro. In 1972, her contributions to folk music helped place Carrboro on the national map when she was presented with the Burl Ives Award by the National Folk Festival Association.  To read Mayor Lavelle’s proclamation go to
