PZI helps the town identify and carry out its vision for sustaining existing and future populations and offers professional planning, zoning, building code, engineering, and geographic information services to residents, property owners, businesses, and visitors. Departmental staff also provide support to a number of standing citizen advisory boards and commissions and to citizen committees that are formed to consider special projects.

The departmental structure includes three Divisions:
Zoning, which handles land use permitting and compliance and administration of the development review process.
